The Cathedral That Outlived Its Builder

Antoni Gaudí began work on the Basilica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona in 1883. He knew from the start he would never see it finished. The design was so ambitious — eighteen towers reaching toward heaven, each representing a biblical figure, every surface encrusted with sculptural detail — that Gaudí understood it would take generations to complete.

For the last twelve years of his life, he devoted himself entirely to this one project. He moved into the workshop on site, living so simply that when he was struck by a streetcar in 1926, passersby mistook him for a beggar. When people asked why he poured himself into something he would never see completed, he reportedly said, "My client is not in a hurry."

Gaudí died that year. A full century later, construction continues. New teams pick up where old ones left off, following his original vision, adapting with modern tools but holding to the same purpose.

There is something deeply biblical about this. The writer of Hebrews tells us that the great men and women of faith "did not receive what was promised" but saw it from a distance and welcomed it (Hebrews 11:13). They persevered not because they would see the finished work, but because they trusted the Architect who drew the plans.

Your faithfulness today may be a foundation someone else builds on tomorrow. Keep laying stones. The Master Builder is not in a hurry — but He never abandons what He starts.
