The Cells That Beat Together
In the 1960s, researchers at the laboratory of developmental biologist Malcolm Steinberg at Princeton University observed something remarkable about heart muscle cells. When individual cardiomyocytes were isolated in a petri dish, each one beat at its own rhythm — some fast, some slow, each pulsing to a private tempo. They were alive, but alone.
Then the researchers moved the cells closer together. As the cardiomyocytes came into contact, something extraordinary happened. They formed tiny bridges between themselves called gap junctions — microscopic connections that allowed electrical signals to pass from one cell to another. Within hours, the isolated cells began adjusting their rhythms. The fast ones slowed. The slow ones quickened. Until every cell in the dish was beating in unison, as one heart.
No single cell commanded the others. The synchrony emerged from connection itself.
This is a portrait of the church as God designed it. Paul writes that we are "one body with many members" (1 Corinthians 12:12), and that portrait is not poetry alone — it is biology. We were never meant to beat alone. When we isolate ourselves from the Body of Christ, we keep our own rhythm, but we lose the power of shared purpose. It is only when we draw close enough to form real connections — vulnerable, consistent, life-giving — that we begin to beat as one.
You cannot be the heart of God in the world by yourself. You need the cell next to you.
