In the human heart, there is a tiny cluster of specialized cells called the sinoatrial node. These cells do not pump blood. They do not strengthen the heart walls. They do exactly one thing: they generate the electrical impulse that tells your heart when to beat.
Discovered by Arthur Keith and Martin Flack in 1907, the sinoatrial node is your heart's natural pacemaker. Without it, the four chambers would fire chaotically, each contracting on its own random schedule. But because these small, faithful cells send their signal — roughly one hundred thousand times every day — your heart beats in rhythm, and blood flows where it needs to go.
