The Cells That Remember What You Were Meant to Be

Inside every caterpillar, there are clusters of cells that scientists call imaginal discs. For the caterpillar's entire crawling life, these cells sit dormant, waiting. They carry the blueprint of the butterfly — the wings, the antennae, the compound eyes — but they do nothing while the caterpillar goes about its earthbound business.

Then comes the chrysalis. And here is where it gets remarkable. The caterpillar doesn't simply sprout wings. It dissolves. Biologist Bernd Heinrich documented this process in detail: the caterpillar's body releases enzymes that break down nearly every structure into a kind of biological soup. If you opened a chrysalis at this stage, you would find almost nothing recognizable. It looks like destruction. It looks like the end.

But those imaginal cells? They survive. They activate. They begin to multiply and organize, feeding on the dissolved material of the old life to build something the caterpillar could never have imagined — a creature made for flight.

The Apostle Paul wrote, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here." Sometimes the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives feels less like renovation and more like dissolution. The habits we relied on stop working. The identity we built starts coming apart. And we wonder if God has forgotten us.

He hasn't. He is activating something that has been waiting inside you since before you were born — the person El Shaddai always designed you to become.
