The Center Who Built a Hospital
In 1987, a seven-foot-two teenager from Kinshasa, Congo, arrived at Georgetown University on an academic scholarship. Dikembe Mutombo planned to study medicine and return home to heal his people. But basketball coach John Thompson saw him in the gymnasium and urged him to try out for the team.
Mutombo became one of the NBA's greatest defenders — four-time Defensive Player of the Year, eight-time All-Star. Yet he never forgot why he came to America. In 2006, he opened the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa, named after his mother who passed away before seeing it completed. For Mutombo, basketball was always the vehicle, never the destination.
The Apostle Paul understood this rhythm. His tentmaking wasn't his calling — it funded his mission. His Roman citizenship wasn't his identity — it opened doors for the Gospel. Every skill, every platform, every open door served something beyond itself.
Some of you feel stuck in work that seems disconnected from anything eternal. You're teaching, selling, managing, or driving — and wondering where God is in any of it. But what if your career is the vehicle, not the destination? What if the Almighty placed you exactly where you are because that's your platform for something only you can do?
The question isn't what you do. It's what your doing makes possible.
