The Church Nourished by Nations and Kings
Isaiah 58:16 declares: "Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles." This remarkable promise describes the Church's sustenance through the wealth, power, and resources that nations and kings willingly contribute to her growth.
The imagery is maternal, not predatory. F. Delitzsch observed that this sucking is that of a teknon (child), not a vampire—the Church receives nourishment as an infant receives milk from her nurse's breasts. The figure originates in Deuteronomy 33:19, where Moses prophesied similar blessing. This is enrichment through providence, not plunder through conquest.
Matthew Henry identified two complementary excellencies. First, the Church finds herself countenanced by her neighbours: nations and kings embracing Christianity lay themselves out for the Church's good, maintaining her interests with the tenderness a nurse shows her charge. Second, the Church finds herself countenanced by Adonai Himself: "Thou shalt know that I, the Lord, am thy Saviour."
The Gospel Church exceeds Old Testament Jerusalem's brief splendor. Her perpetual excellencies transcend temporal power, sustained by Elohim's covenant faithfulness. Kings and nations serve not through coercion but through voluntary conversion—their resources become instruments of the kingdom's advancement. The promise stands: not the shedding of blood, but the sharing of milk; not conquest, but cooperation in Yahweh's redemptive purpose.
