The Clot That Held Everything Hostage
Neurologists have a saying: "Time is brain." When a patient arrives in the emergency room showing signs of an ischemic stroke, every minute matters. A blood clot has lodged itself in an artery, cutting off oxygen to millions of brain cells. Speech slurs. An arm goes limp. The world tilts sideways.
But there is a rescue. A drug called tPA — tissue plasminogen activator — can dissolve that clot if administered within the critical treatment window. Physicians describe watching it work almost in real time. Blood begins flowing again. Color returns. Words come back. A hand that hung lifeless slowly clenches into a fist. The blockage that held everything hostage is broken apart, and what was dying starts to live again.
Sin operates like that clot. It lodges itself in the place where life is supposed to flow freely — in our relationships, our purpose, our peace. And the longer it sits, the more damage it does. We lose feeling in the places that once made us most alive.
But the Gospel is God's tPA. When Christ's grace reaches the point of blockage, it does not merely manage the condition. It dissolves what never belonged there. Paul wrote it plainly: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36).
Freedom in Christ is not a slow negotiation with what binds us. It is restoration — sudden, complete, and coursing with new life.
