The Coach's Whistle
When legendary basketball coach Dean Smith retired from the University of North Carolina in 1997, he left behind more than a record book. He left behind Bill Guthridge, his faithful assistant of thirty years. Guthridge had turned down head coaching jobs at other programs — repeatedly — because he believed his place was beside Smith. He never wavered. He never left.
When Smith finally stepped away, Guthridge didn't just inherit the clipboard. He inherited the culture, the relationships, the philosophy that Smith had built over decades. In his very first season, Guthridge led the Tar Heels to the Final Four. Reporters were stunned. Guthridge wasn't. He had been watching, learning, and refusing to leave for thirty years.
That is exactly what we see in Elisha. Three times Elijah told him to stay behind — at Gilgal, at Bethel, at Jericho. Three times Elisha said the same thing: "As the Lord lives, I will not leave you." He wasn't being stubborn. He was being faithful. He understood that the mantle doesn't fall on those who wander off when the journey gets long.
And when Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak and struck the Jordan, the waters parted. Not because of the cloak itself, but because the God who empowered Elijah now empowered the one who had refused to walk away.
