The Code He Gave Away
In 1989, a quiet British scientist named Tim Berners-Lee wrote the code that would become the World Wide Web. He built the protocols, designed the language, created the first browser. He held in his hands what would become the foundation of modern life — online banking, video calls with grandchildren, the phone in your pocket.
Economists have estimated the Web's value in the trillions of dollars. Berners-Lee could have patented it. He could have become the wealthiest person who ever lived. Instead, he gave it away — freely, completely, to everyone.
When asked why, his answer was disarmingly simple: if the technology had been proprietary, it probably would never have taken off. He understood that the Web's power depended on his willingness to let go of it.
Jesus said something remarkably similar two thousand years earlier: "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for My sake will find it" (Matthew 16:25). The paradox of humility is that what we clutch tightly shrinks, and what we release with open hands multiplies beyond anything we imagined.
Berners-Lee's gift connected billions. Christ's humility — leaving heaven's throne for a manger, a cross, an empty tomb — connected us to the Almighty forever.
What are you gripping so tightly that it cannot grow? True humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is holding what you have with open hands, trusting that God can do more with your surrender than you ever could with your control.
