The Code That Was Given Away
In 1991, a twenty-one-year-old Finnish student named Linus Torvalds wrote an operating system kernel in his Helsinki bedroom. He called it Linux. What he did next changed the world — he gave it away. Not sold, not licensed for profit. Given freely, with one remarkable condition: anyone who improved it had to give their improvements away too.
Today, Linux runs nearly every major server on the internet, every Android phone, and most of the world's supercomputers. A gift from a college student's bedroom now powers the digital infrastructure of civilization. It all began because one person decided that what he had built was too important to keep for himself.
Scripture tells us about another gift that was too important to withhold. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son" (John 3:16). The Almighty looked at what was most precious to Him — not source code, but His own Son — and decided that a world in desperate need was worth the cost.
And like that open-source license, the gift of Christ comes with a beautiful condition: freely you have received, freely give. Every act of mercy, every moment of sacrificial love, every time we lay down our comfort for another person — we are passing along the open-source grace of God, contributing back to a kingdom that has no proprietary walls, no paywalls, no restricted access.
The greatest sacrifice in history was given away freely. And it still is.
