The Code That Wasn't Junk
For decades, scientists dismissed nearly 98 percent of the human genome as "junk DNA" — vast stretches of genetic material that appeared to serve no purpose at all. It just sat there, silent and seemingly useless, while the remaining two percent did the visible work of coding proteins.
Then in 2012, the ENCODE Project — a massive international research effort involving over 400 scientists across 32 laboratories — published findings that stunned the scientific world. What they discovered was that roughly 80 percent of that so-called junk DNA was actually functional. Those "useless" stretches were regulating genes, switching them on and off at precisely the right moments, acting as a vast control system hidden in plain sight.
What the scientific community had called purposeless turned out to be essential.
Some of you feel like junk DNA this morning. You look at the people around you who seem to be doing the visible, important work — the ones coding the proteins, if you will — and you wonder what you're here for. Your contribution feels like filler. Background noise. Pages of code that nobody reads.
But the God who knit you together does not create junk. The Psalmist declared, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14). Every part of you — even the parts whose purpose you cannot yet see — is functional in the hands of the Almighty.
You are not filler in God's story. You are essential. And your purpose is being activated at precisely the right time.
