The Code They Called Junk

For decades, geneticists dismissed nearly 98 percent of human DNA as "junk" — meaningless filler between the genes that actually mattered. It had no obvious function, so scientists assumed it had no purpose. It was just taking up space.

Then came the ENCODE Project. In 2012, an international consortium of over 400 scientists published their findings in Nature, and the scientific world was stunned. What everyone had written off as biological waste turned out to be an elaborate regulatory system — switches, dimmers, and timers that orchestrate when and how genes activate. That so-called junk DNA was quietly directing the symphony all along.

Some of you feel like junk DNA this morning. You look at the people around you who seem to carry obvious purpose — the leaders, the speakers, the ones whose gifts are easy to name — and you wonder if you are just filler. You show up. You serve. But you wonder if any of it matters.

Hear what the Psalmist declared: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." The God who encoded purpose into every nucleotide of your DNA did not make spare parts. There is no junk in His design.

You may not be the gene that everyone notices. You may be the regulatory sequence — the quiet, hidden, absolutely essential part that makes everything else work the way it should. And without you, the whole system would unravel.

God does not create without purpose. Neither did He create you without one.
