The Comeback That Changed Everything

In the summer of 2021, Simone Biles stood on the world's biggest stage at the Tokyo Olympics and did something no one expected. The greatest gymnast in history stepped back. She withdrew from the team final and most individual events, battling a dangerous mental block gymnasts call "the twisties" — a sudden inability to sense where your body is in midair. Critics questioned her toughness. Many assumed her career was over.

But Biles was not finished. She was being remade.

Three years later, at twenty-seven — an age when most gymnasts have long since retired — she returned at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She didn't just compete. She won three gold medals and a silver, becoming the most decorated American Olympic gymnast in history. But what struck people most wasn't the medals. It was the joy. The woman who returned to the mat was not the same one who had left it. She was freer, steadier, more fully herself.

This is how the Lord works. Transformation rarely looks like an unbroken climb. More often, God takes us through a dismantling before the rebuilding. Paul put it plainly: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here" (2 Corinthians 5:17). The old doesn't always leave gracefully. Sometimes it has to be peeled away in seasons that feel like failure.

If you are in a season of breaking, take heart. The Almighty is not destroying you. He is making you new — and the version He is crafting is freer, stronger, and more His than ever before.
