The Compass They Were Born With
Every autumn, monarch butterflies begin a journey of nearly three thousand miles from southern Canada to a small forest in Michoacán, Mexico. What makes this migration astonishing is that the butterflies making the trip have never been there before. They are three or four generations removed from the monarchs that left Mexico the previous spring. Yet they navigate with stunning precision to the same groves of oyamel fir trees their great-great-grandparents departed from months earlier.
Neurobiologist Steven Reppert and his team at the University of Massachusetts Medical School discovered that monarchs carry a time-compensated sun compass in their antennae, paired with a magnetic sense that orients them even under overcast skies. Their purpose is written into their very biology. They do not wander. They do not guess. They are built for the journey.
Scripture tells us something similar about ourselves. The psalmist writes that God knit us together in our mother's womb, that all our days were written in His book before one of them came to be. The Almighty did not create you and then assign you a purpose as an afterthought. He wove the purpose in first. Your calling is not something you invent. It is something you discover, because it was there before you were.
You were made for a destination you may not yet see. But the One who made you built the compass in.
