The Corked Vessel: How Unbelief Blocks Divine Grace
An empty vessel, tightly corked, remains dry even when cast into the sea or when water is poured upon it in abundance. So it is with our hearts. Unbelief seals them shut, preventing the water of life from filling them, however abundantly Elohim pours grace around us.
Christ could not do many mighty works in His hometown—not because His power was limited, but because unbelief bound His hands. This sin does more than lock the human heart; it restrains the Saviour Himself (Burkitt). The imperfection we observe in modern Christian character, our defective morality, and our nearly godless civilization trace their roots to obscure perception of Divine truth. Only clear-sighted faith grasps the truths of revealed religion and illuminates our standing before God.
Without faith's clear vision, the obligations, duties, privileges, and graces that religion imparts remain invisible. We cannot see the life of holiness and devotion that beckons us. Our broken Christian witness flows from want of faith in our Lord's doctrines and His vision of life—our relations to Him and to eternity itself. Faith alone brings union with Christ and enables us to realize our relation to God as Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. Until that cork of unbelief is removed, the infinite supply of grace cannot enter.
