The Counter-Signal

In 1978, Dr. Amar Bose boarded a transatlantic flight and slipped on the airline-provided headphones. The roar of the jet engines drowned out every note of music. That frustration sparked a decades-long engineering quest that would eventually produce Bose's noise-canceling technology.

Here is how it works: tiny microphones on the outside of the headphones constantly sample the ambient noise — engine rumble, crowd chatter, construction. Then a processor generates a precise inverse sound wave, a mirror image of the noise. When the two waves meet, they cancel each other out. The noise does not disappear from the cabin. It is still there. But the counter-signal allows you to hear what actually matters.

Faith works the same way.

The noise of this world never fully stops — anxiety about tomorrow, grief from yesterday, the relentless hum of uncertainty. Faith does not promise to remove those things. But it provides a counter-signal. When fear says "you are alone," faith generates the inverse: "I will never leave you nor forsake you." When despair says "nothing will change," faith answers with the opposite frequency: "Behold, I am making all things new."

The writer of Hebrews called faith "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." It is the counter-signal that lets you hear the voice of God clearly — even when the engines of life are roaring.
