The Couple Who Chose the Overlooked Child

In 2019, David and Maria Santos walked through a state-run orphanage in São Paulo, Brazil. Social workers guided them past rows of toddlers — the ones most couples wanted. But David stopped at a room in the back where seven-year-old Rafael sat alone, drawing pictures of houses. Rafael had a cleft palate, a speech impediment, and a file full of rejections.
