The Courage That Carries No Weapon

In the 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond Doss stands before a military tribunal, refusing to touch a rifle. His fellow soldiers mock him. His commanding officers try to break him. Everyone insists that a man who will not carry a weapon has no business on a battlefield. But Doss, a committed Seventh-day Adventist and Army medic, will not bend. He believes the Almighty has called him to save life, not take it.

Then comes the Battle of Okinawa. The carnage on that jagged cliff is almost unbearable to watch. When American forces retreat, Doss stays behind — alone, unarmed, surrounded by enemy fire. One by one, he drags wounded soldiers to the cliff's edge and lowers them to safety on a rope. Seventy-five men. All night long, his desperate prayer echoes across the ridge: "Lord, help me get one more."

Most of us picture courage as charging forward with fists clenched. But Doss shows us something closer to what Scripture describes. His courage was not the absence of fear — it was faithfulness in the presence of it. He had no weapon, no backup, no guarantee he would survive. He had only a conviction that God had placed him there for a purpose.

The courage the Lord asks of us rarely looks like a Hollywood charge. It looks like staying when everyone else leaves, trusting that the One who called you will sustain you.
