The Courage to Count Backward
Every day in hospitals around the world, patients do something remarkably brave. They lie down on a narrow table under fluorescent lights, and an anesthesiologist they may have met only minutes before asks them to count backward from ten. By seven or six, they are gone — breathing surrendered to a ventilator, heartbeat monitored by a stranger's watchful eye, body given over entirely to hands they are choosing to trust.
No one would call this passive. The decision to undergo surgery requires research, consultations, and deliberation. But eventually, the patient reaches a threshold that no amount of information can carry them across. They must simply close their eyes and let go.
Dr. Atul Gawande, the Harvard surgeon and author of Being Mortal, has written that the relationship between patient and physician depends on what he calls "the leap" — the moment a person decides that the evidence is sufficient and the character is trustworthy, and acts on that belief before they can see the outcome.
Faith works the same way. We study Scripture. We weigh the testimony of Christ's faithfulness across generations. We examine the evidence of God's hand in our own lives. But eventually, trusting God means closing our eyes on a table we did not build and letting the Great Physician do what only He can do.
You cannot be healed and stay in control at the same time. Trust is the holy art of counting backward.
