The Courage to Stand Up and Be Known
In Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, there is a moment that still takes my breath away. Jean Valjean — a former convict who has rebuilt his life as a respected mayor and factory owner — learns that an innocent man named Champmathieu has been arrested and is about to be convicted in his place. Valjean could stay silent. No one would ever know. His comfortable life, his reputation, his freedom — all of it would remain intact.
Instead, he walks into the courtroom at Arras and declares his true identity, knowing it will cost him everything. He chooses the destruction of his own safety rather than let an innocent man suffer for his silence.
That is what courage looks like. Not the absence of fear, but the willingness to lose everything for the sake of what is right.
Scripture tells us that when the religious leaders commanded Peter and John to stop preaching, they replied, "We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard" (Acts 4:20). There are moments in every life when staying silent is the easier path — when speaking truth costs us comfort, reputation, or standing. But the Holy Spirit does not call us to comfort. He calls us to faithfulness.
Sometimes courage means walking into the courtroom of your own life and telling the truth nobody wants to hear — including you. The God who sees you in that moment is the same God who walks with you through whatever comes next.
