The Courtroom Stand

In the film Les Misérables, there is a moment that stops your breath. Jean Valjean has built a new life. He is a respected mayor, a factory owner, a man the whole town depends on. Then he learns that a stranger has been arrested and mistaken for him — dragged before a court to face a life sentence for crimes Valjean committed years ago.

Valjean could stay silent. No one would ever know. His comfortable life would continue undisturbed. Instead, he walks into that courtroom, stands before the judge, and declares who he really is. He tears open his shirt to reveal the brand on his chest. He sacrifices everything — his reputation, his freedom, his future — because he cannot let an innocent man suffer in his place.

That is the shape of biblical courage. It is not the absence of fear. Valjean's hands trembled. His voice broke. He knew exactly what it would cost him. But he understood that silence, when truth is required, is its own kind of prison.

Scripture tells us, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9). The Almighty does not promise courage will be painless. He promises we will not walk through the courtroom alone.

Some of you are facing your own courtroom moment this week — a truth that needs speaking, a stand that needs taking. The cost is real. But so is the One who stands beside you.
