The Crooked House on Elm Street
In 2019, a couple in Waco, Texas bought a charming 1920s bungalow, eager to renovate. They poured forty thousand dollars into gorgeous hardwood floors, custom cabinetry, and a farmhouse kitchen that belonged in a magazine. Six months later, cracks spiderwebbed across every wall. Doors wouldn't close. The kitchen island pulled away from the countertop by nearly an inch. A structural engineer delivered the verdict in minutes: the original foundation had been compromised by decades of water damage, and no one had checked before building on top of it. Every beautiful improvement they'd made was slowly tearing itself apart because it rested on something crumbling. The entire house had to be lifted, the foundation replaced, and much of their expensive work redone from scratch.
Paul understood this principle deeply. Writing to the Corinthians, he insisted that Jesus Christ is the only foundation worth building on. We can construct elaborate ministries, impressive programs, and beautiful worship spaces, but if they aren't anchored to Christ Himself, the cracks will come. And Paul presses further still: "Do you not know that you are God's temple?" Each believer, each congregation, is a sacred dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. The Almighty doesn't just visit — He inhabits.
That couple in Waco learned what every church must remember: it doesn't matter how stunning the structure looks if the foundation can't hold it. Build on Christ, and what you raise will stand.
