The Data Beneath the Damage

In 2003, after the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart during reentry, debris scattered across East Texas. Among the wreckage, NASA recovered a hard drive from an onboard science experiment — charred, warped, and partially melted. By every reasonable measure, the data was gone forever.

They sent it to Ontrack Data Recovery in Minneapolis. Engineers carefully separated the melted aluminum platters, cleaned them one microscopic layer at a time, and rebuilt what fire and freefall had tried to destroy. They recovered ninety-nine percent of the data.

Here is what strikes me about that story: everyone who looked at that blackened drive saw destruction. The recovery specialists saw something else entirely. They saw data that was still there, beneath the damage.

This is how God sees you.

The world looks at a life scorched by addiction, shattered by betrayal, warped by years of wrong turns, and sees something beyond saving. But the Almighty who spoke galaxies into existence looks at that same life and sees what is still written underneath — His image, the original design, the identity He encoded into your very soul before you drew your first breath.

Redemption is not God starting over with a blank drive. It is the Master Recovery Specialist retrieving what everyone else had given up for lost, restoring what was always and irreducibly there.
