The Diligent Hand and the Slack: Prosperity Through Industry
Proverbs 10:4 declares, "The hand of the diligent maketh rich." Our life depends upon our industry. Elohim ordained that man should labour—not as punishment, but as partnership with the Divine Husbandman in cultivating the field of life. The "diligent" are the nimble-handed, those active and agile enough to rise early, peering into darkness to glimpse opportunity's outline. They account for microscopic matters: the smallest coins, moments and minutes, secondary engagements that lesser minds ignore.
This principle reveals three contrasts between idleness and industry. First, the diligent hand works while the slack hand rests. Second, the industrious soul seizes opportunities—he "does the work of the season"—while the negligent one sleeps in harvest, letting prospects pass. Third, destiny follows: the industrious man gains prosperity and hears his Master's "Well done!" ruling over many things, while laziness everywhere brings ruin. "Drowsiness clothes a man in rags."
This rule applies equally to business and the soul's concerns. The earth produces thorns instead of grapes without human cultivation. The fallen cannot be left idle with safety. Labour has become humanity's blessing since Eden. As the proverb states: "If you do not wait on your business, your business will not wait on you." That tender plant of grace will not thrive in a sluggard's garden. He who would gain in godliness must put his soul into the business.
