The DNA That Was Never Junk

For decades, scientists dismissed roughly 98% of the human genome as "junk DNA" — vast stretches of genetic code that appeared to serve no purpose at all. It seemed like biological waste, leftover debris from millions of years of evolution. Then in 2012, the ENCODE Project — a massive international research effort involving over 400 scientists — published its findings. What they discovered stunned the scientific community. At least 80% of that so-called junk DNA was actually functional. It regulated genes, controlled when cells turned on and off, and played critical roles in development and disease prevention. The code wasn't meaningless. We simply hadn't understood what it was doing.

I think about this when people sit in my office and say, "Pastor, I just don't see what purpose any of this serves." The season of waiting. The years spent in a job that felt like a dead end. The suffering that seemed to produce nothing.

But the God who encoded purpose into every strand of your DNA is the same God who wastes nothing in your life. What looks like junk to you — the detours, the disappointments, the stretches of your story that seem to serve no function — may be doing the most important regulatory work of all. El Shaddai, the Almighty, is writing purpose into passages of your life you haven't learned to read yet.
