The DNA That Wasn't Junk
For decades, scientists dismissed roughly 98% of human DNA as "junk" — meaningless sequences with no apparent function. It seemed like biological waste, leftover from millions of years of evolution. Then in 2012, the ENCODE Project — a massive international research effort involving over 400 scientists — revealed something stunning. That so-called junk DNA was not junk at all. Those sequences act as switches, regulators, and promoters, controlling when and how our genes turn on and off. What looked purposeless turned out to be essential. Without it, our cells could not develop, heal, or function.
There is a sermon in our chromosomes.
Some of you are living in a season where you feel like the junk DNA of your own story. The career that stalled. The years spent caregiving while your peers advanced. The quiet, hidden work that nobody applauds. You look at those chapters and think, "That was wasted time." But the God who designed three billion base pairs of genetic code with zero waste does not waste your life either.
The Psalmist understood this: "All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be" (Psalm 139:16). Every season — even the ones that seem purposeless to you — is doing regulatory work in your soul, shaping who you are becoming.
Nothing the Almighty authors is filler. Not in your DNA, and not in your days.
