The Dome No One Believed Could Stand
For more than a century, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence sat unfinished. A vast octagonal opening gaped at its center, waiting for a dome that no architect in Europe knew how to build. The gap was simply too wide for the wooden scaffolding that traditional construction required.
Then came Filippo Brunelleschi with an audacious proposal: he would build the dome without any ground-based scaffolding at all. He would use a double-shell design with an interlocking herringbone brick pattern never attempted at this scale. When the city leaders demanded he explain his method in detail, he largely refused, guarding his vision closely. They had to trust him anyway.
And trust him they did. For sixteen years, from 1420 to 1436, Brunelleschi raised what remains the largest masonry dome ever constructed. Workers laid over four million bricks, each placed according to a plan most of them couldn't fully grasp.
There are seasons in faith when God asks us to trust a Builder whose methods we cannot comprehend. We stare at the unfinished places in our lives — the gaping openings where we expected completion — and wonder how anything could possibly span that distance. But the Master Architect sees what we cannot. He is laying bricks in patterns we won't understand until we step back and behold the whole cathedral.
Trust doesn't require understanding. It requires a Builder worthy of your confidence.
