The Door Was Already Open
In 1967, psychologist Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania made a discovery that would reshape our understanding of human behavior. In his research on what he called "learned helplessness," Seligman found that animals subjected to unavoidable distress eventually stopped trying to escape — even when the way out was clearly available. They had internalized their captivity so deeply that freedom, though within reach, went unclaimed.
The most striking part? When researchers gently guided them toward the exit again and again, they gradually rediscovered their ability to move freely. The barrier was no longer physical. It was a belief — that nothing they did could change their circumstances.
How many of us live the same way? We carry chains that Christ has already broken. We sit in cells whose doors the Almighty flung open at Calvary. Paul wrote to the Galatians, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1).
The enemy's greatest trick is not keeping you locked up. It is convincing you the lock still works.
Seligman's research also revealed something beautiful: helplessness is not permanent. With patient, repeated guidance, what was learned can be unlearned. That is exactly what the Holy Spirit does — gently leading us, Sunday after Sunday, prayer after prayer, toward the open door we have forgotten is there.
