The Dots That Become a Masterpiece

Stand close to Georges Seurat's painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte at the Art Institute of Chicago, and all you see is chaos — thousands upon thousands of tiny, individual dots of color. A fleck of blue here. A spot of orange there. Each one, on its own, is unremarkable. Step back, though, and something breathtaking happens. Those isolated points of pigment resolve into sunlight filtering through trees, families strolling along the Seine, a whole world shimmering with life.

Seurat spent two years applying those dots, a technique he called pointillism. He understood something profound: no single dot carries the painting. The blue dot needs the gold dot beside it. The green needs the red. Each color does something it could never do alone — it changes how its neighbor is perceived. Together, they create light itself.

This is how the Apostle Paul describes the body of Christ. "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you'" (1 Corinthians 12:21). You may feel like a single, unremarkable dot in the life of this church — your quiet prayer, your casserole delivered on a hard Tuesday, your faithful presence in that third pew. But the God who spoke light into existence is composing something with your life that only becomes visible when you stand alongside your brothers and sisters.

No dot is wasted. No member is unnecessary. Step back, and watch what the Almighty is painting.
