The Editor Who Goes to the Source

In December 2023, the FDA approved a treatment called Casgevy — the first therapy to use CRISPR gene-editing technology to cure sickle cell disease. For decades, doctors could only manage sickle cell's symptoms: the crushing pain crises, the blood transfusions, the hospital stays. But CRISPR works differently. It goes into the patient's own cells, finds the single misspelled letter in their DNA — one tiny error among three billion characters — and corrects it. Not a patch. Not a workaround. A rewrite at the source.

This is how God heals.

We are experts at managing our brokenness. We build coping mechanisms, develop routines, arrange our lives around the wound. And sometimes that management is necessary for a season. But the Healer doesn't stop at symptom management. The prophet Ezekiel heard God promise, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you" (Ezekiel 36:26). Not a repaired heart. Not a medicated heart. A new one.

God's healing reaches the source code of who we are — the deep places where shame first took root, where fear first wrote its instructions, where grief first fragmented our sense of wholeness. He doesn't just help us cope with the mutation. He corrects it.

Whatever you have been managing, the Great Physician is offering something deeper. He edits at the level where the error began.
