The Editors Within

In 2015, Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich, and Aziz Sancar received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for revealing something astonishing about your body. Every single day, each of your cells sustains roughly ten thousand to one hundred thousand DNA lesions — damage from ultraviolet light, free radicals, and simple copying mistakes. Left unrepaired, these errors would be catastrophic.

But you are still here. Specialized enzymes patrol your DNA like tireless editors, detecting damage, snipping out broken sequences, and rebuilding them letter by letter with the correct code. Most of this happens while you sleep, without your awareness or effort. You wake up whole — not because you were never broken, but because something within you was designed to restore what was damaged.

Grace works like that.

We accumulate damage daily — harsh words we spoke, selfish choices we made, wounds we suffered that twisted something inside us. Left to ourselves, the errors would compound and consume us. But God, the Master Repairer, does not wait for us to fix ourselves. His grace moves toward our brokenness with the precision of a surgeon and the tenderness of a parent, finding what is damaged and making it right.

And here is the part that should stop us in our tracks: the repair often happens before we even know we need it. While we sleep, while we stumble, while we are utterly unaware, the Almighty is already at work restoring us from the inside out.

You are not held together by your own perfection. You are held together by grace.
