The Ensign Lifted: God's Providence in Missionary Hope
"All ye inhabitants of the world... see ye" (Isaiah 17:3). Our confidence in missionary labor rests entirely upon the prophecies of God's Word declaring it His will. We must examine our object carefully: if it conflicts with the prophets, it shall be disappointed.
The New Testament language promises an elect Church gathered from all nations. Yet after centuries of Gospel preaching, the work remains incomplete. But Scripture declares, "all flesh shall see the salvation of God." We rightly expect the conversion of all peoples—for it is written and shall come to pass.
Yet means and timing are also written. "When He lifteth up an ensign on the mountains, and when He bloweth a trumpet, hear ye!" Dr. Buchanan observed before his death: "The ensign lifted up is the Jewish Church restored to Zion; the Gospel trumpet sounds through Jewish missionaries, reserved for evangelizing the heathen."
Concerning God's rest in providence (verses 4-5): "I will take My rest." When sincere Christians mourn because prayers seem unanswered, consolation arrives through this truth: providence only pauses in consideration. God suspends His answer not in judgment, but tender mercy. He exercises our faith. The trial of faith strengthens what it tests.
