The Example of Compassion - Story
A few years ago, I met a man named David at a local community center. David had recently lost his job and was struggling to make ends meet. When I first spoke to him, I noticed the heaviness in his eyes, a deep sorrow that seemed to weigh down his very spirit. He was lost, feeling like a sheep without a shepherd, just as Psalm 23 reminds us: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
One day, as I was volunteering, I noticed David sitting alone at a table, his hands trembling over a half-finished meal. Without thinking, I pulled up a chair and sat beside him. Instead of offering solutions, I simply listened. David began to share his fears—his worry about making rent, about his family's future, and how isolation was suffocating him.
As he spoke, I felt the words of the psalm wash over us: “He restores my soul.” I shared a bit of my own struggles and how my church community had rallied around me during tough times. Slowly, David's expression shifted from despair to a flicker of hope.
That simple act of connection—of showing compassion—sparked a new relationship. Together, we engaged others in the community, finding strength in shared burdens. David grew spiritually, realizing that he was not alone. In that moment, I witnessed the truth of God’s promise: “Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” Compassion links us, guiding us toward spiritual growth and community, reminding us that even in our darkest valleys, we are never truly alone.
