The Example of Joy - Contemporary Example

Just last summer, I had the privilege of visiting a community center in our city where a remarkable man named Thomas, a retired school teacher, leads a group of young adults. Each week, they gather in a small room filled with the aroma of fresh coffee and the laughter of new friendships forming. What struck me most was Thomas' infectious joy, a joy that transcends his circumstances.

One evening, as he sat among them, he shared his journey of faith. He spoke of his struggles, the loss of his wife, and the years of loneliness that followed. But then, with a twinkle in his eye, he reminded them of Psalm 23:1-6, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” He explained how, through his grief, he found the tender hesed—the steadfast love—of God, guiding him through the darkest valleys.

Thomas shared how faith is not merely a personal endeavor but a community experience. He invited the group to walk alongside him, reminding them that the joy they share in each other’s company is a reflection of God’s grace. He called it “a joy that strengthens” and “a purpose found in service.”

As they laughed and shared stories, I realized this gathering wasn’t just about support; it was a vibrant expression of joy rooted in relationships. And in that moment, I saw the Spirit at work—bringing comfort, nurturing spiritual growth, and crafting a beautiful tapestry of purpose through grace.
