The Example of Kindness - Contemporary Example
There’s a small café in my neighborhood where I often stop for coffee. One morning, I witnessed something that left a lasting impression on my heart. A young mother, visibly frazzled, walked in with her two children. As they shuffled in, the eldest was crying, and the toddler was tugging at her dress, demanding a donut. The mother sighed heavily, her tired eyes betraying the weight of her struggles.
As she approached the counter, fumbling to find her wallet, the barista, a cheerful older gentleman, noticed her distress. Instead of rushing her along, he leaned over the counter, his voice warm and gentle. “How about I make a little magic today? Your kids can have their donuts on the house.”
The mother’s shoulders relaxed, her gratitude evident as she looked up, tears welling in her eyes. “Are you sure?” she asked, her voice trembling. The barista simply smiled, “Of course. Kindness is always free.”
In that simple exchange, I saw a reflection of agape, the selfless love that God demonstrates toward us, as highlighted in John 3:16. Just as God offers us unconditional love, we too are called to extend kindness to one another, especially when life feels overwhelming.
