The Example of Love - Story
There’s a story I want to share about a woman named Ruth, whom I had the privilege of knowing in my last congregation. Ruth was not just any parishioner; she was a master gardener. Her backyard was a living tapestry of colors, with flowers blooming from early spring to late fall. But what struck me most about Ruth was how she nurtured her garden — and, by extension, everyone around her.
One winter, Ruth faced a devastating blow: she was diagnosed with a serious illness. As she faced the uncertainty of treatment and recovery, her garden was the last thing on her mind. But when spring arrived, her love for those flowers drove her to get outside and dig in the soil, even on days when she felt weak. With each seed she planted, she whispered prayers, her faith intertwining with the very earth beneath her hands.
I remember visiting her one sunny afternoon as she worked. She looked up, dirt smudged on her cheeks, and said, “You know, Pastor, I’ve realized that everything we do, even in the toughest times, can be a reflection of God’s love. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things for good, even our struggles.”
That day, I saw her in a new light. Just as Ruth nurtured her garden, God was nurturing her spirit. Through her act of love, she taught us that faith can grow even in the most barren seasons of our lives, reminding us that every struggle can bear the fruit of purpose, joy, and hope. Just like her flowers, we bloom in God’s grace.
