The Example of Mercy - Story
Maria sat alone in her small, cluttered kitchen, the weight of her mistakes hanging heavily in the air like the scent of burnt toast. Just last week, she had lost her job due to a rash decision, a moment of anger directed at a colleague that spiraled into a dismissal. As the tears streamed down her cheeks, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was beyond redemption. Each tear felt like a symbol of her imperfections—her failures echoing in her mind.
Then, her phone buzzed. It was a text from her old friend, Sarah, who had always been a beacon of grace in Maria’s life. "Hey, I’m thinking of you. Can we meet?" Somehow, despite the mess she had made, Sarah still wanted to be with her.
As they sat across from each other, Maria poured out her heart, the words tumbling out in a frantic rush. To her surprise, Sarah didn’t offer judgment or criticism. Instead, she shared her own mistakes—how she had once lost her way but found healing in embracing God's chesed (loving-kindness).
"Remember, Maria," Sarah said softly, "God promises to work all things for good for those who love Him" (Romans 8:28). In that moment, Maria felt the chains of guilt begin to loosen. Slowly, she began to understand that mercy isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being loved despite her imperfections. It was the beginning of her journey toward healing, grace, and ultimately, forgiveness—both of herself and from God.
