The Example of Patience - Contemporary Example
Several years ago, I received a call from a dear friend who had been wrestling with doubt. She was a remarkable woman of faith, yet she found herself feeling lost and unsure of her spiritual path. She shared with me how she felt like the disciple Thomas, constantly searching for evidence to bolster her beliefs. Her heart longed for transformation, but she felt stuck, unable to trust in the unseen.
As we talked, I remembered a story from my own life. I had planted a small garden in my backyard, hopeful for a vibrant display of flowers. Every day, I watered those tiny seeds but saw little progress. There were days of rain, days of intense sun, and moments where I doubted whether anything would bloom at all. Yet, I continued to nurture the soil, believing something beautiful was taking root beneath the surface.
Then, one morning, I awoke to find a single green shoot breaking through the earth. It was a moment of awe—evidence that patience had borne fruit, even when I had doubted.
I encouraged my friend with this image, reminding her of Proverbs 3:5-6, which calls us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, even when we can’t see the path ahead. Just like my garden, our faith requires cultivation and patience. Transformation often unfolds quietly, beneath the surface, and in due time, hope will emerge, guiding us toward the fullness of what God has in store.
