The Example of Self-control - Story
There’s a small community garden I visit every week. It’s tucked away behind an old church, a sanctuary for budding vegetables and flowers. Last summer, I watched as a neighbor named Ruth tended her plot with unwavering dedication. She would arrive every morning with her kneeling pad and a basket of tools, determined to cultivate her little corner of the earth.
But one day, a storm rolled in unexpectedly. The winds howled, and heavy rain threatened to wash away all her hard work. I saw Ruth standing there, soaked to the bone, her heart heavy as she surveyed the damage. The weeds had overtaken her precious seedlings, and the ground was muddy and unwelcoming. I could see her despair, and yet, something remarkable happened. Instead of giving up, she knelt in the wet soil, pulling at the stubborn weeds with a fierce resolve.
Ruth reminded me of Jeremiah 29:11, where God declares His plans for us—plans to prosper and not to harm, plans to give us hope and a future. Just like Ruth, we must exercise self-control in the face of setbacks. Spiritual growth often feels like tilling the soil of our lives, requiring trust that God is guiding us, even through storms.
As you consider your own garden of faith, remember that self-control isn’t just about resisting temptation; it’s about trusting God’s promise and nurturing the seeds of faith He has planted in you. With every weed you pull and every seed you sow, you cultivate a life of fruitfulness, grounded in hope. Embrace that journey, for God is faithful to bring forth a bountiful harvest in His time.
