The Exclusivity of Divine Service: Choosing Whom You Will Serve
"Choose you this day whom ye will serve"—Joshua's command pierces the heart of Christian decision-making. The service of Elohim is exclusive; it admits no interference, competition, or divided homage. God requires your whole heart—all its principles, dispositions, and sensibilities. When your heart surrenders to Him, your conduct demonstrates His will and glory in every department of life.
Yet many deceive themselves with speculative assent while practical rebellion persists. You think, feel, and act as though serving the Lord were evil, harboring latent repugnance beneath polite profession. This divided devotedness—real commitment to idols while claiming submission to Adonai—constitutes slavery masquerading as freedom. You have been "halting between two opinions" (dipsos: wavering, unstable), attempting to amalgamate incompatible systems.
The delusion is fatal. You reject the "atrocious saying" that it is evil to serve the Lord, yet your actual behavior proves otherwise. This self-deception, however long it persists in "this land of self-deception and shadows," must inevitably shatter before the day of retribution.
The summons demands immediacy: "Choose you this day." Why delay when you have acknowledged grievous error? Further postponement belies your professed convictions. Do not hesitate, snatching another pleasure before renouncing worldly connection. Account the time past as far more than sufficient. The choice between Yahweh and idols cannot be perpetually suspended.
