The Farmer Who Slept Through the Storm
A hiring committee in rural Iowa once asked each candidate the same question: "Why should we hire you as our farmhand?" One man listed his equipment experience. Another boasted about his speed during harvest. But the last candidate, a quiet fellow named Earl Hagen, gave an answer nobody expected: "I can sleep when the wind blows."
The farmer scratched his head but hired Earl anyway. Weeks later, a violent storm ripped across the plains at two in the morning. The farmer bolted out of bed and ran to Earl's quarters, pounding on the door. Earl didn't budge. Furious, the farmer rushed outside to secure everything himself — only to discover the job was already done. The tractor was sheltered. The hay was tarped and tied. The grain bins were latched tight. The livestock gates were double-locked.
Earl could sleep when the wind blew because he had already done the preparing. His confidence wasn't reckless — it was rooted in something already settled.
The writer of Hebrews tells us that the Almighty has already spoken the words that settle everything: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." That promise isn't pending. It's already fastened down. When financial anxiety howls at midnight and uncertainty rattles the windows, believers can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid." Not because the storm isn't real — but because the One who holds us has already declared He never lets go.
