The Father on the Track

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and this was his moment. Then, halfway around the track, his right hamstring snapped.

Redmond crumpled to the ground. The race went on without him. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but he waved them off. He stood up. And he started hopping toward the finish line.

Then something happened that sixty-five thousand spectators will never forget. A large man pushed past security, ran onto the track, and wrapped his arm around Derek. It was Jim Redmond — his father. "We're going to finish this together," he said. And they did. Father and son crossed that line while the stadium wept.

Paul wrote, "When I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:10). Courage is not always the explosive start. Sometimes it is the gutted, limping, tear-soaked decision to keep moving when everything in you screams quit.

And here is the gospel wrapped in that moment: you do not finish alone. The Father sees you crumpled on the track of life, and He runs to you. He does not carry you off the field. He puts His arm around you and whispers, "We will finish this together."

Whatever race feels impossible this week, the Almighty is already running toward you.
