The Father Who Finished the Race

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal carrying the weight of years of injury and disappointment. He had torn his Achilles tendon before the 1988 Seoul Games, missing his chance entirely. Now, finally healthy, he was running the race of his life.

Then, halfway around the bend, his hamstring snapped. Redmond collapsed on the track, clutching his leg, his Olympic dream shattered in an instant. But instead of staying down, he pulled himself up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face.

That is when sixty-five thousand spectators watched something unforgettable. A large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while the entire stadium rose to its feet.

That is the gospel in a single image. We are all Derek Redmond — broken mid-race, unable to finish on our own strength. And God, our Heavenly Father, does not watch from the stands. He runs onto the track. He puts His arm around us. He whispers, "We will finish this together."

Redemption is not God fixing us from a distance. It is the Almighty entering our pain and carrying us home.
