The Father Who Wouldn't Let Him Finish Alone

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, fought through multiple surgeries, and finally made it to the biggest stage in the world. When the gun fired, he exploded out of the blocks. Then, halfway around the bend, his hamstring snapped.

Redmond crumpled to the track. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but he waved them off. He stood up and began hopping toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. The crowd of 65,000 fell silent.

Then a large man pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and said, "We're going to finish this together." The two of them walked and hobbled down the final stretch while the stadium rose to its feet in a standing ovation.

Derek didn't win a medal that day. He didn't even record an official time. But the world witnessed something more powerful than gold — a father who refused to let his child suffer alone.

That is the heart of the Gospel. The Almighty does not watch our struggles from a distance. When we stumble, when our strength gives out, when every dream seems torn apart, our Heavenly Father steps onto the track of our suffering and says, "We will finish this together."

Hebrews reminds us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Take courage — you do not run alone.
