The Father Who Wouldn't Let Him Quit

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, recovering from five surgeries just to reach that moment. When the gun fired, he exploded off the blocks — until 150 meters from the finish line, his right hamstring snapped. He collapsed on the track, clutching his leg, his Olympic dream shattered in an instant.

But Derek Redmond did something no one expected. He stood up and began hopping toward the finish line. Officials rushed in to stop him. He waved them off. Then, from the top of the stands, his father Jim pushed past security, sprinted onto the track, and wrapped his arm around his son. "You don't have to do this," Jim told him. Derek said, "Yes, I do." His father replied, "Then we're going to finish this together." The two of them crossed the line arm in arm while 65,000 people rose to their feet.

Derek Redmond didn't win a medal that day. But he fulfilled something deeper than a race — he finished what he was meant to start.

Purpose doesn't promise us a pain-free path. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us the Almighty has plans to give us a hope and a future, but that verse was written to people in exile, not on vacation. Sometimes purpose means limping forward when everything screams stop — and discovering that your Heavenly Father has already left the stands to meet you on the track.

You were not made to quit. You were made to finish.
