The Father Who Wouldn't Stay in the Stands

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final with everything he had trained for on the line. About halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. He crumpled to the ground in agony while the other runners surged ahead.

What happened next remains one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Redmond pulled himself up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. Then a large man pushed past security guards and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did, step by agonizing step, while 65,000 people rose to their feet.

Derek didn't win a medal that day. His time didn't count. But he finished — because his father refused to watch his child suffer alone.

Healing doesn't always look the way we expect. Sometimes the Almighty doesn't remove the torn hamstring. Sometimes He doesn't take away the diagnosis, the grief, or the broken relationship. But the promise of Scripture is that He enters the track. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted," the psalmist writes, "and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

God is not a spectator to your pain. He is the Father who climbs over every barrier to reach you, wraps His arm around your shoulder, and says, "We're going to finish this together."
