The Figure Already Free

Michelangelo once described his approach to sculpture not as adding something to marble, but as removing everything that wasn't the figure. He looked at a raw block of stone and saw the form already living inside it. His chisel didn't create — it liberated. When he carved his famous Slaves series, now displayed in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, he deliberately left some figures only partially emerged from the rock. Arms strain outward. Torsos twist against the stone still gripping their legs. They are caught in the very act of becoming free.

Stand before those unfinished sculptures and you feel something stir in your chest — because you recognize yourself.

This is what the Almighty does with every human soul. Freedom in Christ is not God making us into something we were never meant to be. It is God removing what was never supposed to be there in the first place — the fear, the shame, the false identities we've worn so long we forgot they weren't our skin. The chisel of grace strikes, and it can sting. But every blow reveals more of the person God designed before the foundations of the world.

Paul wrote, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Not freedom to become anyone, but freedom to finally become yourself — the self that was always there beneath the stone, waiting for the hand of the Sculptor who loved you enough to keep carving.
