The Figures Still Emerging from the Stone

In the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, just down the hallway from the famous David, stand four unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo known as the Prisoners. They are among the most haunting works in all of Western art. Each figure appears to be mid-struggle, twisting and straining to pull free from the rough marble that still encases much of their bodies. A torso emerges here, a knee presses forward there, but none has fully broken free.

Michelangelo believed that every block of stone already contained a figure within it. The sculptor's task was not to create something new but to remove everything that was not the true form — to liberate what was already there.

That is one of the most beautiful pictures of what God does in us.

We come to Him encased in fear, in shame, in old habits that have hardened around us like stone. And He does not look at us and see the rough block. He sees the person already inside — the one He designed us to be before the world pressed in. And day by day, with the patience of the master artist, He chips away what does not belong.

Freedom in Christ is not becoming someone we are not. It is being released into who we have always been. The chisel may sting. But every strike removes something that was never truly part of us.
