The Finish Line He Never Crossed Alone
In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal as one of the favorites. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and poured everything into this moment. When the gun fired, he exploded off the blocks.
Then, halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped.
Redmond crumpled to the ground. Stretcher bearers rushed toward him, but he waved them off. He stood up. Grimacing, hobbling, weeping — he began to hop toward the finish line. The crowd of 65,000 fell silent, then began to rise.
And then a man pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line as the entire stadium wept and cheered.
That is the gospel picture of faith. Faith is not the absence of pain. It is not pretending you are strong enough to run alone. Faith is the willingness to stay on the track — and the trust that when your legs give out, the Father is already running toward you.
Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us to run with endurance the race set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus. But notice — we are never told to run alone. The Almighty Himself draws near when we stumble.
Whatever race you are limping through today, your Heavenly Father has not left the stands.
