The Finish Line He Never Earned

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final with everything on the line. He had trained for years, overcome five surgeries, and finally made it to the biggest stage in the world. Then, halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped.

Redmond crumpled to the ground. The other runners vanished ahead of him. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but he waved them off. He stood up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face.

Then something happened that 65,000 spectators will never forget. A man in a baseball cap pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed the finish line as the entire stadium rose to its feet.

Derek Redmond did not earn that finish. He could not earn it. His body was broken, his race was lost. But his father came to him — uninvited, unstoppable — and carried him home.

That is the gospel. We pull our spiritual hamstrings every single day. We collapse under the weight of our sin and shame. And the Father runs to us — not because we've earned it, but because we are His. Grace is God refusing to let us lie on the track alone.
